Prepreg materials are dielectric materials that are used to form an insulation layer that connects adjacent cores or layers within a PCB stack-up. Made from fiberglass or fabric that has been pre-impregnated with resin—usually epoxy-based or partially cured polyimides—prepregs are essential for providing insulation and preventing short circuits between layers. There are three basic types according to the resin content namely High resin (HR), medium resin (MR), and standard resin (SR). They are chosen depending on the specific requirements for thickness, layer structure, and impedance in the multilayer PCB.

In the PCB manufacturing process, the various layers are arranged and the stack-up is exposed to high temperature and pressure conditions wherein the prepreg softens and flows, in turn, bonding the layers onto each other. Once it cools, the prepreg sets hard with the whole structure intact. This is what makes possible the multilayer PCBs' structural integrity and functionality.
