Lead Free PCB Assembly

The soldering process which uses a lead-free solder material is called RoHS or Lead-free soldering. Lead (Pb) based elements are Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyls, and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether. RoHS Printed Circuit boards must be assembled without using solder than does not contain any of the lead based elements mentioned above. 
PCBs with zero lead content are gaining interest among manufacturers as they don’t threaten human life and environment, unlike lead-based PCBs which affect life and surroundings in a hazardous manner.

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), a European Union directive restricts the use of solder materials containing lead. RoHS soldering-based PCB board can withstand high temperature (217°C/422°F) and contains at least 2% flux weight/ weight. Flux is a non-corrosive and non-conductive reducing agent which is used to remove the oxides generated during heating while performing soldering.
